Week nine was Albania's luckiest of the 1996a season. The Picayunes
eek out a 5-3 margin over the young Slugger squad, with two ties in a
pitching department that also saw Albania finishing with putrid ERA
and WHIP figures.
 Yuck. Luck.

Last week the Top 2 teams in the Pacific division and the two teams
with the best overall records squared off in what looked to be an epic
confrontation. The Sleepers would be recovering emotionally from the
lose of David Justice for the season. The Men of LA didn't expect a
healthy Kevin Mitchell or Sid Fernandez, but the absence of B.J.
Surhoff was sure to hurt.

Coming into the matchup, I felt my best chance would be to
utilize my superior pitching to take those categories and then steal
as many hitting cats as I could.
From the start that tack looked to be a bad idea as Smoltz
turned in an expected shutout, but the supposed "weak" spots in the
Sleeper staff, Angel Miranda, Flash Gordon and Mike Williams all put
in their best outings of the year.
The Men of LA seeing that Grimsley was used in the pen the
week before were anticipating the dreaded pitching penalty, but not
only did Grimsley start, HE turned in his best outing of the season
with a shutout. Going into the weekend I needed good outings out of
my All-Stars Tommy Glavine and Ken Hill to have any chance. They gave
it me, and in his second start of the week, Mark Leiter also came
through. Going into the last day I needed the unfathomable, a bad
outing out of Cy Young favorite John Smoltz. His 4 ER in 6 innings
were what my team needed to take wins, ERA, and CR.
The Sleepers despite their best pitching outing of the season
with a 2.18 ERA and 1.21 CR lose both cats to a 1.45 ERA and 1.06 CR
by the Men of LA.
The presence of two closers on the Men of La wasn't enough as
Timlin's 3 saves gave the Sleepers that category.
The hitting just didn't live up to its hype. The Sleepers
with arguably the best offense in the league had probably his worst
week of the season by hitting on .245 with .252 RP 7 dingers and 4
steals. However as opposed to the pitching, the Men of La played down
to the level of their opposition and were unable to capitalize by also
turning in their worst offensive week of the season. In the end,
things went down to the wire, with Jose Hernandez's solo shot on the
last day out of 4 total at bats on the week giving the Sleepers 2
wins. The Men of LA hit .243 with .232 RP, 7 dingers and 2 steals.
They lost BA by one hit and lost the tie in homers. The loss in RP
was also by the slimmest of margins. The Men of LA fell to the
defending champs 3-5 in what easily could have been a 5-3 or even 6-2
win. However, we anxiously await a possible rematch in the playoffs
assuming I can hang on to the Wild Card.

The battle of SR-516 ended in a draw.

The Kent Cowboys bats fell asleep due to the poor pitching that the
Flyers had. However, this strategy worked well enough for the Flyers to
pull out a 4-4 tie for the week. Steady offensive numbers for all of the
Flyers prevailed in their first win of BA and RP this season, while the
SB's were still owned. The Cowboys starting pitching was very effective,
led by James Baldwin's 2 wins and 2.08 ERA and Andy Ashby's 8 innings of
shutout baseball. However, 3 blown saves by two closers cost Kent the
pitching sweep and the overall victory.
