Date: Tue, 4 Apr 95 23:45:52 EDT From: Draftmeister Rodger Subject: Draft Card Format To: Baseball List Two This is an old file I got from Reed. Additions I'd make: a single line number can have *many* possible players--from which I'd select the first available. If you want a SS badly, list all you'd want, in order. Don't draft players from rosters! And finally, put your team name right above your list--I delete all the address info, and it's easier if it's directly above the draft card. I'll think of more stuff as we go. rp I hereby present the official draft card format: 1. POS:FirstName LastName (Team)/POS:FirstName LastName (Team) 2. POS:FirstName LastName (Team)/POS:FirstName LastName (Team) 3. POS:FirstName LastName (Team)/POS:FirstName LastName (Team) 4. POS:FirstName LastName (Team)/POS:FirstName LastName (Team) This format adheres to the current format used by the rosters. Roster maintainers should find it easier to add draftees to rosters with this method (especially if you use XEDIT). Example: 1. C:Hector Villanueva (Cubs)/SP:Alan Mills (Yankees) 2. OF:Glenallen Hill (Indians)/IF:Mike Bordick (A's) for as many rounds as you want. If Rodger does not receive a new card for each day, he will use your previous card. He will begin with the next line after the last line processed from the day before. That is if you got a player from line 3, then Rodger will start looking at line 4 on the next day. This is a key point and different from the way Kris processed the cards. I urge you to fill out lengthy cards. My BITNET link went down for 4 days during my first draft (as a result I got Kevin Elster and Kurt Stillwell back to back). Lenghty cards will provide some sort of insurance against links. The draft deadline will be 3 PM EST the day of each set of scheduled rounds. Reed Sturdivant, Draft Coordinator! (former) Late Night Nine Date: Tue, 4 Apr 95 23:51:08 EDT Subject: Draft cards To: Baseball List Two NOTE: I also had this old file, for extra information: I've been asked about draft card formats. Basically, you need to put plenty of players on a card because soon, there'll be 48 players (or 72 if we need to do 3 rounds in a day) taken each day. There are multiple ways of doing this: 1. You might just list, in order, all the players you want in a given day. You'll get the first available. The disadvantage is that this is a good way to end up with 3 SSs or something. 2. List, in order, the players you want in a round. Round 8 might be all OFers, for example, or all SPs, or all prospects (as I've been known to do). Then, you do round 9. 3. Some combination of 1 and 2. It's a longer list, but there are multiple names on it. This is a typical Slugger draft card: 1. SS: Jon Doe (Atl)/IF: Mark Smith (Balt)/SS: Steve Jones (Clev)/ 2B: Mack Knife (Tor) 2. SP: Jose Gonzalez (Tex)/SP: Tom Terrific (NYM)/SP: Jackie Perez (Cin) 3. OF: Joe Smithe (NYY) 4. SS: Steve Jones (Clev)/ 2B: Mack Knife (Tor) Note: I've included position, full name, and team for every player. Also, it's perfectly OK to list the same player more than once on a card--if you want to risk getting 2 players from the same line. I could well get Doe and Jones, for example. Do in the first, Jones later. Basically, the draftmeister reads a line until they find a player that is not yet on a team. He's yours. Then, the next round, the NEXT LINE is used. I'll read across, find a player, then move down to the next line for the next round. And so on. So, be sure to include plenty of names, especially as the draft gets going. Get them in on time. AND DON'T DRAFT PLAYERS THAT ARE ALREADY ON ROSTERS! Deadlines: If your card isn't in receipt soon after 3 pm, the draft moves forward EVEN IF LINKS ARE THE CAUSE. Sorry, but we have to move fast. I may allow an hour or 2, but that's about it, unless we have a system wide problem or something. This should provide incentive for getting cards in early. If your card is SENT after 3 pm ET, the Prez usually rules that you get your picks at the end of the next day's round. If it is a link problem or the picks arrive only a little while late, you might be so lucky as to get your picks at the end of the same day. Either way, you are much better off getting lists in on time.
